Last Day for Big Adventure - May 31, 2007

Last night Uncle Josh treated us to "The Lion King" at the theater. That is where people dress up in costumes and act out stories. We rode a new taxi to the theater and it even had seatbelts. Then we had to walk a little way to get to the line to go in. The play was really good but it did not start until 8pm and I am usually getting ready to go to bed about that time. It was very late when we got back to Molly's apartment but Bentley was waiting for us. I ate a bowl of oatmeal and then went to bed.

Grama Jo told me we had to get up at 3am to get our ride to the airport. Our plane was leaving at 5:30am. I did not wake up but Papa and Grama Jo did. Papa had to carry all the luggage and my carseat down all the stairs and Grama Jo said she carried me ---- I was ASLEEP! They said we sat on the stoop until the car came and then rode about 30 minutes out to JFK airport. We unloaded the car, got our luggage checked, took the luggage to security, went through security (including taking our shoes off and putting them back on) and waited for the plane. I woke up when Papa sat me down on the seat in the plane. I looked out the window and the sky was pink and purple. It was real pretty. They told me the sun was coming up. Grama Jo and I did not even wait for the plane to take off to Houston, we just went to sleep.

I woke up and ate a bowl of Cheerios but Grama Jo kept sleeping. She had not gone to bed because she did the blog and then packed and cleaned up around the apartment a little. Finally Grama Jo woke up and ate her Cheerios. Then we watched the plane land and we were in Houston, TX. That is another state to add to my list of all the ones I have been in.

We got off the plane and found some more breakfast. Papa was getting hungry and wanted eggs, but Grama Jo and I ate pancakes from McDonalds. They sure were good. I ate 4 pancakes. Then we found the gate to wait for our plane to Fayetteville. We read books on that plane and Grama slept a little. I was getting excited to see my brother and my sister. My mom was bringing them to the airport to meet me. I was afraid we beat her to the airport so I called her from the plane but she said they were there at the luggage place.

When I got down the escalator I saw them and started running and Beck ran to me and we hugged. I picked him up hugging I was so glad to see him. Then I hugged Sujina and then my mom. She had tears in her eyes she was so glad to see me.

We got Beck's suitcase (he had loaned it to me because it had wheels) and I put green frog on for a ride. Beck pulled my suitcase out to the car for me. Wasn't that a nice brother? I told him all about a giant piece of a tree I saw at the museum (Ed. note: it was a huge cross-section of one of the biggest Redwood trees that had taken 2 men 13 days to cut down in 1895!) and Beck said, "no way!"

We all got in mom's van and stopped at Wendy's for some lunch and headed to my house. The box was there from FAO Swartz so Beck got his backhoe and I got my excavator and Sujina got her toys for the tub. We got to play in the sandpile and it was nice to be back on grass.

I sure had lots of fun with Uncle Josh and Molly and with Papa and Grama Jo but it is really good to be back home with my dad and mom and my brother and sister. I told Beck that next time he will get to go too.

Now I am looking for Josh, Molly and Bentley to get to Fayetteville so we can play some more.

more photos

one thing i forgot to mention is that someone reads to me at every food stop, and i've had an ice cream break of some sort at least twice a day. that will be a hard habit to break, but i've been eating lots of real food too, so it hasn't been just ice cream.

also, it's too late to figure out how to flip the pictures the right way, and i'm on my third computer cause grandma blew the other one up. it only has a red screen now.

we're really tired, so it's all pics tonight.

i promised grandma i'd write more when i got back to fayetteville. that way i could get some sleep tonight before our car comes to pick us up for the airport at 3:15 in the morning. but its gonna be hard to sleep tonight because i had the biggest day yet. lady liberty, empire, more dinosaurs, a dinosaur movie, and then the lion king until late at night.

Last day in city, May 30

Today Papa and Grama Jo have been married 43 years! That is longer than my mom is old. They got to ride on the Staten Island Ferry today and that was something they had never done on their annversary before.

Uncle Josh and Molly came over this morning and Molly told us bye. She had to go to the eye doctor and then to her last day of work. She said she would see us in Fayetteville in about a week. She and Uncle Josh are going to pack up their stuff in a U-Haul trailer and drive Papa's car back to Arkansas.

Uncle Josh took us on the subway some more. We rode all the way to the ferry. It was a big orange ferry boat and lots of people got on. No cars. We went over to Staten Island and we rode right by lady Liberty. She is really big and I could see she was on an island. I really kinda wanted to go on the island but Grama Jo said the next time we come to NY we will. I told her we would bring Beck next time and asked her when but she did not know. When we got to the island everyone had to get off the ferry and go into the building and then get back on. We did not have to buy tickets for it.

On the ride back Papa bought me a bag of popcorn. We saw a lot of tugboats and some police boats. We saw Lady Liberty again and we could see her torch lit up. She looks friendly but she can not talk. There was a big navy boat called an aircraft carrier leaving the dock and we could see the sailors all lined up on it. They all had on white. There were helicopters on the top of it.

After we got back to land we decided to go to the Empire State Building so we rode the subway some more. Then we got out and walked a little way. We could see the Empire building but it hurts your neck to look up so high! I really wanted to go up to the top of it but Josh didn't so Grama Jo stayed with him and Papa took me up. We were in a lot of lines and then got on a fast elevator. We went up 87 floors. We went outside and looked around. Papa let me take some pictures. I wanted to go to the tip top but they don't let people up there so we went back down and found Grama Jo and Josh and went to lunch.

Then we hailed a taxi (Molly told me how to hail a taxi, you put your hand up and yell!) and went back to the Museum of Natural History. I really wanted to see the dinosaurs again before we left. They were all still there and we took some more pictures. We went to see the big blue whale one more time also. Then we got to go to an IMAX movie at the museum and it was all about dinosaurs and how the workers for the museum go out looking for them. They found some in New Mexico where my dad used to live.

Grama Jo wanted to shop at the museum store when we finished so Papa, Uncle Josh and I went outside and found the ice cream truck. I really wanted a snow cone but they were out. I think that must be the favorite thing for people because they have been out when I ask for them. Anyway, I got a Sponge Bob ice cream bar and it was GOOD! Then we got back on the subway and hurried back to Molly's house. She still was not there. I told Grama Jo we could clear a place for Molly to sleep there with us, but she said Molly was visiting some friends.

I was really hungry so while everyone else got dressed to go to the Lion King play I ate a big bowl of oatmeal. Then we went to a Thai restaurant so Grama Jo could have some vegetables. They had spring rolls and I did not want to try a bite. Grama Jo read some books to me and then I read some. I have two new books about Frog and Toad. They are funny. They used to be Uncle Josh's favorite books when he was a little kid. Papa said he remembered reading them to Josh. When Grama Jo ate I read some to myself. She showed me how to make a bookmark so I can save the place when I have to stop reading in the middle of the story.

We rode another cab to the theater. This one even had seat belts so we all put ours on. There were REALLY a lot of people by the theater. We went up two escalators to get to our seats, but they were good. The animals were all people with neat costumes on. We could see men playing drums for the music part. We could see the stage move around and go up and down. It was cold so I sat on Uncle Josh's lap most of the time. I got tired near the end and wanted to go home but we stayed until it was over and I was glad I got to see Simba kill Scar. My favorite character was Scar. Grama Jo really liked the hyenas. They were funny. One had a long red tongue. The people could sing and dance good. At the end all the animals came back out and took a bow. Grama Jo told me that was the cast of the play.

We have to get up at 3am and get in a car kinda like a taxi to go to the airport and go home. I am missing my brother and sister and mom and dad. I will be glad to get back to see them. I have had a great time in New York City with Uncle Josh, and Grama Jo and Papa.

I have learned to swipe the card to get on the subway, to unlock the doors to get into the apartment building and then go up 3 sets of stairs and open the apartment door with a key; to punch the "door" button when Uncle Josh comes and buzzes us; to ride taxis and subways; and to hold hands when going anywhere in the city. I will know lots of stuff to show Beck and Sujina when we get to bring them.

Tuesday, May 29 2007 in NYC

We started the day with a subway ride uptown. We just had to get on one subway this time but it was crowded. I had to stand up and hang onto a pole. Uncle Josh was close by. I read him some of the signs on the subway. One said No smoking, No littering, No music. People don't talk much on the subway.

We went to a big place with lots of American flags called Rockefeller Center. If Besty Ross were still making the flags she would have been real busy! Uncle Josh took me down to the place where they have an ice skating rink in the winter, but now it is an eating place. Then we walked on a red carpet into the building to go to the Top of the Rock. That means you are going to the top of the Rockefeller building. After we showed our tickets we went to the bathroom because Grama Jo says when you are traveling you should not pass up a bathroom! Then a nice lady took a picture of us that looked like we were sitting on a steel beam high up, like when they were building Rocefeller building. We watched a little movie about the Rockettes and then we got into the elevator. It played a movie while it went up FAST. We went to the 67th floor. Papa, Grama Jo, and I went up some escalators and went outside. Uncle Josh just waited for us inside.

We could see all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. There are rivers all around NYC. We saw lots of bridges and Lady Liberty. We could see Central Park but it just mostly looked like trees. All the people and cars looked real tiny from up there. Papa and Grama Jo took lots of pictures and then we went back and found Josh and went back down the fast elevator. I liked it all.

After that we walked down the street to go to FAO Swartz, the biggest toy store in the world. On the way we stopped at the NBA store. It was all about basketball. Uncle Josh and I got to shoot some baskets. There was a basketball on the door and on the wall and a bb hoop and ball over the door outside!

We kept walking and found the toy store. There was a man dressed like a toy soldier outside. He saluted me and said hi. There was lots of stuff to see inside. We went upstairs and saw giant piano keys on the floor. you could walk on them and make music. Grama Jo and I took our shoes off and walked on them That was fun. I ran up and down the keys. Then we started looked for something to buy for Beck and Sujina. I found an excavator that I wanted and then a backhoe for Beck. I think he will really like it. We got Sujina some bathtub toys. The store is going to mail all the boxes to my house in Fayetteville. i hope they will be there when we get home. Grama Jo said that was too much stuff to carry around and take on the plane. Then we found a place to eat lunch in the store. Papa was already there drinking lemonade and then we all ordered lunch. I had bd and honey that Papa had made for me at Molly's house. I had a big glass of chocolate milk and almost spilled it on Papa by accident. He said it was ok.

After that we walked over to my favorite place, Central Park! There is lots of stuff to do there. We climbed on the rocks again and then we found the carosule. Papa, Grama Jo and I rode together. My horse was called the Black Stallion. I liked the ride so much that I got Uncle Josh to go with me again. By then I needed a snow cone, but the man was out so I got a push-up. It was yummy. I shared it with papa and Uncle Josh. Grama Jo was trying to take a picture of me eating it and she slipped of of the picnic bench and fell on the ground!! I think it scared Uncle Josh and Papa but she was ok and just laughed about it. Then she and i bought a plastic blow-up hammer. It was fun to chase the pigeons with it. Uncle Josh told me to not chase pigeons when people are close by because the pigeons fly up into their face!

We decided to get a taxi and go back to Molly's house and rest. I really did not need to rest, but Papa and Grama Jo wanted to. i just played with Bentley the cat. I told him that he had been to the Top of the Rock and tomorrow I think we will go to the Empire State Building.

We took another taxi to go eat supper. Uncle Josh and Papa hold me in the seat like a seatbelt. The taxi's go fast. Our driver honked at another car and I said, "Well, that was not very nice!" He just looked at me! I had some really good pizza for supper and ate almost all of a 12 inch pizza.

We went back to the little park close to Molly's and played a little. I got Josh to swing me on the tire swing. he makes me go round and round like I can't do at school. Then we walked home and showered. It was another big day.

We MIGHT go back and see the dinosaurs again tomorrw. We ARE going to see Lady Liberty and The Lion King. I missed Molly today. She had to work and then go to dinner with a friend. Tomorrow is her last day of work. I hope we get to see her before we go back to Arkansas.
